Surfing

Surf Spots:
      • North Packery Channel Jetties (JP Luby Beach): The most popular and consistent break in the area. The north jetty shelters the beach from strong southern winds and currents, creating clean, predictable waves. It draws large crowds in the summer.
      • South Packery Jetties: Located just across the channel, this spot cleans up beautifully during strong north winds or after winter cold fronts. It is generally less crowded than the north side.
      • North Padre Seawall / Whitecap Beach: Offers a long, mile-wide stretch of beach breaks with uncrowded peaks. It is highly accessible and an excellent playground for both longboarders and shortboarders.
      • Padre Balli Park (Bob Hall Pier Area): Historically a legendary spot that handles much larger, more powerful surf than neighboring beach breaks. Even with the pier currently undergoing structural changes, the surrounding sandbars remain competitive and heavily frequented by local shortboarders.

Swell

    • Summer (June – August): Generally characterized by small, crumbly, and mushy knee-to-thigh-high waves. Perfect for beginners, longboarding, and surf camps.
    • Fall (September – November): Hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico delivers the most powerful, clean, and occasionally overhead groundswells of the year.
    • Winter & Spring (December – May): The most consistent period for rideable surf. Strong passing “Northers” (cold fronts) bring messy, choppy waves that rapidly clean up into high-quality glass once the wind switches offshore.
